Data Sources

Every figure on Maine Political Data originates in a public record. This page identifies those records, the institutions that publish or hold them, and the general manner in which they were compiled into the site’s database.

The sources below are arranged by subject rather than by the page on which their data appear, because a single source often informs several parts of the site. Where a record survives in more than one form — a printed report and a later digital file, or a government web page and its archived copy — each form actually consulted is listed. Citations give the publishing office, the title of the record as that office styles it, the period covered and, where applicable, the repository through which it was obtained.

Each section closes with a note on how the data were treated in compilation. Those notes describe our practice in general terms; the record of every individual adjustment is retained in the project’s database and is available on request.

Maps & Geography

The following records were used in the maps on the site and in assigning towns to the congressional, legislative and county commissioner districts in force for each election. The results, registration and demographics maps are drawn from the Census Bureau’s cartographic boundary files, which match the Bureau’s county-subdivision geography used for the demographic data; the official Maine GeoLibrary polygons are the source of the town boundaries in the project’s geography dataset and of the Legislature history maps.
