The Governors

In order of service. A governor who served non-consecutive terms appears once for each. Tiles marked “Succeeded” are governors who came to office on a vacancy rather than by election to that term.

Sources & Notes

Governors, terms and party labels: Maine State Law and Legislative Reference Library, Governors of Maine, 1820– (rev. March 17, 2025), which draws on Guide to U.S. Elections (CQ Press, 2016), the Legislative Record and Mundy, Presidents of the Senate of Maine from 1820. Party is shown as the Library lists it, with one exception: Richard Vose, acting governor for a day in January 1841, is shown as a Whig (the Library prints Democrat; his biography and the Whig Senate that made him its President point to Whig). For color, Jackson Democrats are grouped with Democrats and Union Republicans with Republicans. Two other slips in the Library list are corrected here: Vose's term ended in 1841, not 1831, and the spellings Kavanagh, Selden Connor and Sebastian Marble follow the governors' own usage. Each governor's Supreme Judicial Court appointments are on this site's Supreme Judicial Court page. Portraits are being added as Matt gathers them (69 of 71 as of October 3, 2026); governors without one show their initials. The Governor Election Results map is the same explorer as the Election Results page, limited to races for Governor: county returns 1820–1867 and selected later years from Michael J. Dubin's United States Gubernatorial Elections, town returns 1868–1938 from the Maine Register, and the official canvass from 1940 (election results v3.5).
