Maine's United States Representatives

Every person who has represented Maine in the United States House of Representatives since the 17th Congress in 1821, in order, with each member's district, service and party.

Party in Maine's House Seats

One lane per congressional district: Maine has had as many as eight districts (1833–1843) and two since 1963. Each band is one member's continuous service in that district, coloured by party; hatched stretches are vacancies. District numbers did not describe the same territory from one apportionment to the next. Hover for the member.

The Representatives

In order of first service. A member who returned after a break appears once for each spell of continuous service. Tiles marked “Filled a vacancy” came to the seat at a special election.

Sources & Notes

Members, districts, party labels, residences and the dates of resignations, deaths and special elections: Maine State Law and Legislative Reference Library, U.S. Representatives From Maine, 1821– (rev. November 18, 2024), which the Library compiled from the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, its clippings files and the Maine Register. The Library's list begins with the 17th Congress; through the 16th Congress (to March 1821) the seven representatives of the District of Maine elected under Massachusetts continued to sit for the new state. Terms are dated to the opening of each Congress (March 4 through 1933, January 3 since 1935) except where the Library gives a day; from 1935 the exact dates come from the public-domain congress-legislators dataset, which also supplies Biographical Directory identifiers and birth dates. Two mid-term vacancies the Library's list does not mark are added from the Biographical Directory: Clyde Smith died April 8, 1940 (Margaret Chase Smith won the June 3 special election) and Frank Fellows died August 7, 1951 (Clifford McIntire won the October 22 special election). In 1882 Maine elected its four representatives at large; the Library's district numbers for the 48th Congress are kept. Early party labels are grouped as the Library prints them: “Rep.” before 1855 is the Jeffersonian (Democratic-)Republican party, “Rep.” from the 34th Congress the modern Republican party. The results map is the same explorer as the Election Results page, limited to U.S. House races: town returns 1868–1938 from the Maine Register and the official canvass from 1940 (election results v3.5). Portraits are being added as Matt gathers them; members without one show their initials.
