The Senators

In order of first service. A senator who returned after a break appears once for each spell of continuous service. Tiles marked “Filled a vacancy” came to the seat by appointment or special election rather than at a regular election.

Sources & Notes

Senators, seats and party labels: Maine State Law and Legislative Reference Library, U.S. Senators From Maine, 1820– (rev. November 18, 2024); exact dates of service and the party sequence of each senator from the Senate Historical Office's list for Maine (senate.gov/states/ME). Before 1913 senators were chosen by the Legislature; the Legislature's choices and the vacancies between them are as the Senate records them. Party colour follows the last party the Senate lists for a spell of service (William Pitt Fessenden, elected a Whig in 1854, is coloured Republican; the Library prints him as a Whig throughout). Biographical Directory identifiers and birth dates from the public-domain congress-legislators dataset. The results map is the same explorer as the Election Results page, limited to U.S. Senate races: town returns 1916–1938 from the Maine Register and the official canvass from 1940 (election results v3.5). Portraits are being added as Matt gathers them; senators without one show their initials.
